Joseph: Oxford Street Inn Shelter and Services

"Joseph" is a long-time guest of the Oxford Street Inn. He has had a difficult life, struggles with addiction, and is battling a terminal disease. His anger and pain have led to crime, difficult relationships, and anti-social behavior. During his time at the Oxford Street Inn, he was often disruptive and troublesome, but he was always treated with the dignity and respect that are the hallmarks of hospitality at the shelter.

Joseph was eventually successfully engaged by case workers and has moved into permanent supportive housing operated by Catholic Charities. Despite the challenges he confronts every day, with the help of his case worker he has remained housed and avoided serious trouble. He now lives in a nice apartment that he is careful to keep neat and clean. He contributes to the rent when he is able, recently completed a 28-day in-patient drug rehabilitation program, and participates in weekly out-patient drug treatment. He has also begun to trust people, specifically his case worker. Joseph is managing his illness and is trying to change the way that he encounters the world.

Joseph epitomizes what Catholic Charities is trying to accomplish at the Oxford Street Inn and through its housing programs: everyone has value, and the people who are the most troubled and difficult to engage are the most in need of our hospitality and support.
